ULDALL Casts Statue of Resistance Fighter Max Bæklund

Advanced 3D technology and classic foundry craftsmanship from the ULDALL foundry in Vejen come together in tribute to a sabotage operation during World War II that became a turning point in Danish history.

One of the most significant acts of sabotage during the German occupation of Denmark has now been immortalized in cast iron. A new statue of resistance fighter Max Bæklund has just been unveiled at Forum in Frederiksberg, at the exact spot where, in August 1943, he carried out the operation that helped trigger the August Uprising and the final break with the policy of collaboration.

The statue depicts Max Bæklund with the iconic beer crate which, during the sabotage operation, concealed 28 kilograms of explosives, leading to the destruction of Forum and preventing the quartering of German troops in the heart of Copenhagen. Today, the sculpture stands as a lasting symbol of courage and determination at a pivotal moment in Danish history.

The ULDALL foundry in Vejen was responsible for casting the 650 kilograms statue in cast iron. The project was realized in close collaboration with model maker Joakim Zacho Weylandt, sculptor Thomas Foldberg, and Søren Peter Kristensen from Ingholt Consult, where modern 3D scanning, modeling, and sand casting were combined with traditional casting techniques.

 - It is, in all modesty, a great honor to help pay tribute to such a heroic and decisive act in the resistance struggle. We’ve been working on this project for a couple of years and are very proud of the beautiful and expressive result. Cast iron gives a raw and unpolished look while also having a solid weight that underscores the gravity of the action, says Dion Brun, sales director at ULDALL.

The unveiling took place on the 86th anniversary of the occupation of Denmark and brought together several hundred participants, including representatives from the Municipality of Frederiksberg, historians, partners, and descendants of resistance fighters from the Holger Danske group.

For ULDALL, the project is a prime example of how the foundry’s technical expertise and artisanal precision come together in perfect harmony.

- We have a lot of talented and passionate employees who, every day, help bring to life the sometimes wild ideas and projects from engineers, artists, and designers. In 30 years, our employees will still be able to point to all the things they’ve contributed to, which is one of the main reasons why our employees are both loyal and, in my opinion, the best colleagues in the world, says Dion Brun.
