Danish pump manufacturer Landia has benefited greatly from ULDALL's advice and technical expertise in cast iron in a recent conversion from welded to cast components for use in pumps for wastewater and biogas, among other things.
Landia, a pump manufacturer, based in Western Denmark, has worked with ULDALL for several decades. ULDALL supplies nearly all of Landia's SG and GG iron components for its pumps and agitators used in agriculture, wastewater, and biogas sectors. These components must be able to withstand heavy loads, so they require high strength and wear resistance. This makes cast iron an obvious solution.
From welding challenges to cast quality
Cast components can replace certain welded solutions, and a recent example of this is a component used in the intake of Landia's pumps for wastewater and biogas. It was previously made as a welded component, but after consultation and development in close collaboration with ULDALL, these are now made as cast components.
- We have been working to standardize this specific product according to international standards at Landia, and when we get into slightly larger series, it pays off best as a cast product. In addition, the cast part has some design advantages, which, among other things, make it possible to work in some other geometries that are not quite as square, explains Mikkel Frøjk, Team Lead R&D at Landia, and continues:
- There is also greater material thickness, which gives the product a much longer service life, and we now avoid the risk of leaks that we often experienced with welded items with cast items. We have therefore achieved both a cheaper product and significantly better quality in the switch from welded to cast items.
Flexibility and professional sparring
The conversion from welded to cast components has taken place in close consultation and dialogue between Landia and ULDALL. The long-standing collaboration provides a solid foundation for development, as ULDALL has in-depth knowledge of Landia's products and can therefore contribute competent and relevant advice in finding the right solutions.
- We greatly appreciate our collaboration with Landia, which has spanned several decades. It is an example of how good collaboration and mutual trust ultimately create better solutions. By combining our knowledge of casting technology with Landia's design and functional requirements, we have been able to develop a solution that is both stronger and more cost-effective, says Dion Brun, Sales Director at ULDALL.
Increased focus on documentation
Landia also values close cooperation:
- In relation to the specific solution, where we have replaced a welded part with a cast part, ULDALL has contributed to making the part even smarter in terms of both casting and machining. Their simulation tools and many years of practical experience have helped us achieve an optimal solution, says Mikkel Frøjk, continuing:
- In general, we have always had a good working relationship with ULDALL. They provide excellent sparring and quick response times – and often come back with something that we couldn't have figured out ourselves. In addition, ULDALL is really good at meeting the increasing documentation requirements that we face from our customers. It is a great help to us that ULDALL can deliver the required documentation quickly and easily.
Advantages of replacing welded parts with cast parts:
There can be several advantages to converting welded parts to cast parts. Depending on the purpose of the part, the advantages may include:
- Higher precision and flat surfaces, which make machining easier
- Increased service life thanks to greater material thickness and a more uniform structure
- Lower total cost – both in production and operation
- Possibility of smarter geometries, making it possible to adapt the workpiece precisely to the purpose
